LHS STUDENT RECEIVES R.A. HORN OUTSTANDING ACHIEVEMENT AWARD

Mrs. Jennifer Smeltzer, an Intervention Specialist at Loudonville High School, is the recipient of
the Franklin B. Walter Outstanding Educator Award.  The award, presented annually by the Ohio
Department of Education’s State Support Team (Region 7), honors teachers who excel in their work
with students with disabilities.

According to Christine Butts, Director of Pupil Personnel, Smeltzer is excellent at teaching
executive functioning skills—organization, study skills, working memory and self-control.

“For example, Jennifer worked diligently with a student who was formerly in a resource room setting
all day,” Butts said. “By utilizing a comprehensive integrated system he has grown academically,
socially and personally. The student will receive the R.A. Horn Outstanding Achievement Award, also
sponsored by SST 7.”

The awards are named for two veteran school administrators. Dr. Franklin B. Walter served as Ohio’s
State Superintendent of Public Instruction. R.A. Horn administered statewide programs for students
with disabilities while working with Dr. Walter at the Ohio Department of Education.
